Situated in an area perfect for astronomy-watching, Wappa Falls Observatory is a hidden treasure in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. It is equipped with a slew of exhibits and telescopes to allow you to gape in awe at the night-time sky’s splendor and the day-time majesty of the heavens.

Take note that Wappa Falls Observatory is also available for pre-booked tours. A 600 mm Newtonian Reflector telescope is sheltered in the dome above.

During the day, a full-spectrum solar telescope is available that has Calcium K and Hydrogen Alpha attached.

A Planet Walk is also available wherein you can see posters of all the planets as well as the sun.

Owned and operated by astronomer Owen Bennedick, Wappa Falls Observatory is located amongst lakes, gardens and gorgeous nature walks.

Trip Advisor Reviewer “Andrew P” considers Wappa Falls Observatory as “A hidden treasure.”

“Found this place by accident. Looks a bit ramshackle, but has a lot of high-end amateur astronomical equipment. Owen is passionate, and knowledgeable. Visited in daytime, so no night sky to observe. However he has numerous ways to look at the Sun. Well worth a visit, I will be returning at night. Excellent for schools, and families.

A little further along the road there is a little park by a dam. Great spot for a picnic.”

Another review from Trip Advisor user “Kim D” describes the Observatory as a “Little gem.”

“Owen is so passionate about space and his telescopes. His extra terrestrial asteroids, gems and chunks of iron are a treasure to behold. I loved this place, but as a lone traveler, felt like I would have got more out of this experience as a group booking, watching the presentations. Still I recommend this little pop in stop to anyone who loves astronomy and likes waterfalls!”

Meanwhile, Trip Advisor Senior Reviewer “Anna02061956” finds the Observatory as an “Excellent place for a picnic.”

“Excellent place for a picnic or just to stop and enjoy the scenery and the falls. When I went in June there was some Autumn leaf colours on the trees. Absolutely beautiful would recommend this to anyone going to the Sunshine Coast or even driving through.”

Top Trip Advisor Contributor “Swissmiss6969” walked towards the Observatory and finds the experience “..pleasant..”

“A walk that is not too big or small. Just right. from our accommodation..it took about 15 minutes of a leisure walk to reach the park and then to see the Falls. We walked the 1.4 KM rainforest loop and it was very pleasant.”
